Tipping in Restaurants
When dining out in Vietnam, it’s customary to tip 5-10% for good service but it’s perfectly OK to tip nothing. Some high-end restaurants will include an automatic 5-10% service charge.
Hand any tip in cash directly to your server.
If you’re eating outside a big city, it might be better to refrain from tipping in general as it’s much less common and might cause awkwardness or offense.
Tipping in Bars
Simply round up your bill or leave a small tip in Dong (an amount equivalent to $1 USD is perfectly acceptable). Hand it to the bartender directly.
Since Vietnamese bartenders are relatively low paid they often rely on these tips to supplement their income.
Tipping Taxi or Tuk-Tuk Drivers
It’s standard practice to round up your taxi or Tuk-Tuk fare, especially if your driver has been friendly or helpful (e.g. If the ride costs ₫92,000, you could hand over ₫100,000 and tell them to keep the change).
If they make the assumption that you’re tipping them and don’t even offer you the change, this is bad practice. If that’s the case, you can politely request your change and skip the tip.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
Offering the equivalent of $1 USD per bag in Dong is standard, especially if you’re staying in a luxury hotel.
Tipping Housekeeping
Leaving the equivalent of $1-2 USD per day in Dong is a considerate way to express your gratitude for a clean and tidy room. Place the tip on your pillow to make sure they notice it.
Tipping Tour Guides
Tipping your Vietnamese tour guide $3-5 USD per day in Dong is customary, especially if they’re friendly, informative or you had a private tour.
Instead of a monetary tip, you could offer your guide a small gift.
Tipping Street Vendors
Street vendors won’t expect tips since bargaining is more common and most will be too proud to accept them even if you try. If you really enjoy the food, it’s better to show your appreciating by giving them a thumbs up or saying “Ăn ngon quá!”, Vietnamese for “It’s delicious!”.
A simple “Cám ơn” or “thank you” can also go a long way.
Which Currency To Use
The official currency of Vietnam is the Dong (VND). US Dollars might be accepted in popular tourist areas but it is a rarity. Stick to Dong for convenience.

Tipping in Restaurants
Since most restaurants in Macau usually add a service charge (typically 10%), there’s no need to add an extra on top. You can tip a small amount in cash or card if you want to but it’s not customary.
On the rare occasion that there’s no service charge, a tip of 5-10% will be appreciated.
You might feel slightly more pressure to tip in some Western restaurants but don’t bow to the pressure if that service charge is included.
Tipping in Bars
You’re not expected to tip in Macanese bars. The 10% service charge is common here too.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
It’s customary to round up your taxi fare to the nearest one or two Macanese Pataca or Hong Kong Dollars (e.g. MOP$18 or HK$18 can be rounded up to MOP$20 or HK$20).
Many Macanese taxi drivers won’t make the assumption that you’re tipping them so will still offer you the change even if you’ve only overpaid by 1-2 MOP or HKD.
If they refuse your tip, don’t make a big deal of it as some don't accept them for moral reasons (common in Macau, Hong Kong and China).
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
Anybody handling your luggage should get around 8 MOP$ per bag (or the Hong Kong Dollar-equivalent). Some might have a moral objection to tipping but it’s better to attempt to tip and leave it up to them to accept or decline.
Tipping Housekeeping
Housekeepers won’t expect a tip since it’s typical for hotels to add on a service charge of around 10%.
Tipping Tour Guides
Unlike in Hong Kong, it’s not customary to tip your tour guide in Macau.
Tipping In Casinos
If you’re buying food or you’re getting a drink in a Macanese casino, the standard 10% service charge is likely to be added to your bill. If you’re gambling, it’s not customary to tip the croupier.
Whilst a few places do accept Macanese Pataca, you’ll typically find most casinos deal in Hong Kong Dollars.
Which Currency To Use
The Macanese Pataca (MOP$) is the official currency of Macau but Hong Kong Dollars (HK$) are widely accepted (and even preferred in most casinos).
Both cash and cards are accepted and ATMs are common.

Tipping in Restaurants
Hardly anyone tips in Singapore due to the inclusion of non-optional service charges in most sit-down restaurants.
In the rare case there’s no service charge, you can tip nothing or 5-10% for good service. Since many locals are concerned about the import of Western tipping culture, sometimes it’s best to play it safe and avoid it completely.
If you do want to leave a tip, use cash and hand it your server directly but discreetly. Don’t leave it on the table.
Tipping in Bars
You’re not expected to tip in Singaporean bars. However, you can round up your tab to make things easy.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
If you’re relying on Taxis, Grab or Gojek to get around Singapore, you’ll be happy to know that tips aren’t expected.
However, it is a common practice to round up your fare. Especially if your driver has gone above and beyond by carrying your luggage, opening your door or providing you with some local recommendations. In that case, just tell your driver to keep the change.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
Hotel porters are used to getting tips in the region of S$1-2 per bag, depending on the weight of your luggage and the number of bags. Hand the tip directly to the porter but, again, be discreet.
Tipping Housekeeping
A S$2-5 tip per day will be appreciated by your hotel housekeeper. Leave the tip in an envelope on your pillow or they won’t know it’s for them.
Tipping Tour Guides
Given tour guides often interact with visitors from countries with diverse tipping customs, they’re more accustomed to receiving a wide range of tips. Everything from nothing to 20% and above.
That being said, a tip of S$5-10 is considered standard if your tour has been particularly enjoyable.
Tip your guide directly at the end of the tour and be discreet as always.
Don't Tip Changi Airport Staff
Changi Airport staff can’t accept tips by law. Instead, express your appreciation with a simple “thank you” or “terima kasih".
Which Currency To Use
In Singapore you’ll need to use the official currency, the Singapore Dollar (SGD). International currencies like US Dollars and British Pounds are only accepted in some airports and hotels so you’ll need to buy SGD before your trip or use an appropriate card to pay.

In restaurants in Poland, a 10% tip if expected unless you’ve had bad service. If you’re paying in cash and you want the change, don’t say “thank you” or “dziękuję” just yet or the waiter will think you’re tipping the whole amount.
Cash tips are preferable even if you’re paying by card (sometimes there’s not even an option to add a tip by card). Just leave a cash amount on the table after you’ve paid the bill.
Service charges are rare.
Tipping in Bars
Follow the 10% guideline in Polish bars too. Tip jars are common.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
If you’re taking a taxi or Uber, the 10% rule applies here too. However, there’s a bit more discretion here as you should really reserve a 10% tip for drivers that pick optimal routes and/or provide the best service (like helping you with luggage or opening your door).
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
When a porter assists you with your luggage and they’re prompt and helpful, it’s customary to tip around zł5-10. Hand the tip directly to the porter.
Tipping Housekeeping
For housekeeping, a tip of zł5-10 per day can show your appreciation for a clean room and help to ensure you’ll receive good service until the end of your stay. Leaving cash on the pillow will make it clear it’s a tip.
Tipping Tour Guides
Your tour guide will expect a tip of 10-15% but you reserve the right not to tip if you’re dissatisfied with the experience.
Which Currency To Use
You have one currency option when you pay or tip in Poland and that’s the Polish Złoty (PLN). Card payments are widely accepted but it’s still better to carry cash with you for tipping. Sometimes you won’t even get the option to tip by card.

Tipping in Bars
Not strictly expected but rounding up your bill or leaving a small tip is appreciated.
Tipping Taxi Drivers

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Tipping Tour Guides
After a city tour or a desert safari, consider a tip in the region of 0-20%. Feel free to skip the tip if you’re dissatisfied but tip on the higher end of that scale if you had an enjoyable tour (especially if it lasted a full day).
Tipping Bathroom Attendants
In certain upscale venues, there may be a bathroom attendant. Whilst not obligatory, a small tip of 3-10د.إ will be appreciated.

Tipping in Restaurants
When you’re dining out in Canada, a 15-20% tip on the pre-tax total is expected. You can tip more if your server was particularly attentive but 15% should be the absolute baseline.
If you’re paying at the counter, you’ll often run into the now somewhat-infamous tipping tablet which asks you to select from predetermined tip amounts. Don’t let the tablet dictate your tip - adjust it according to the level of service you receive.
You can usually tip via card or cash. If you prefer cash, leave it on the table before you leave.
Tipping in Bars
Canadian bartenders appreciate a good tip but you’re only expected to give a restaurant-level tip if you receive table service.
When ordering at the bar, use your discretion. If your bartender just grabs you a couple of beers, $2 will suffice. If multiple drinks and/or mixing is involved, tip a bit more.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
When it comes to taxis or Ubers in Canada, the tipping situation is relatively straightforward. Tip 10-20% depending on the smoothness of your ride and the friendliness of your driver.
If you’re paying by card, just add the tip when you use the card machine.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
A tip of $1-2 per bag is the norm for hotel porters. Hand them a cash tip directly.
Tipping Housekeeping
Housekeeping staff often go unnoticed but a modest tip of $2-3 per day shows your appreciation for a clean and comfortable stay. You’re also likely to receive better service.
Tipping Tour Guides
Tipping your Canadian tour guide around 10-15% is customary. But feel free to avoid a tip if you’re dissatisfied with your experience.
Which Currency To Use
You’ll only have one currency option in Canada and that’s the Canadian Dollar (CAD or C$). Most establishments accept credit cards but it’s wise to carry some cash for tipping.

Malaysian restaurants often include a “service charge” in the final bill. This isn’t a tip but an additional charge that goes directly to the restaurant to help pay workers’ salaries.
If a service charge isn’t included and you’re satisfied with the service, you can tip an optional 10%. If you don’t tip, your server won’t be offended.
Tipping in Bars
It’s not part of Malaysian culture to tip bartenders. However, you can round up your bill as a friendly gesture.

Don’t tip in bars in Japan either. Japanese bartenders take pride in their craft and consider their service a part of their professional duty.
A sincere "kanpai" (cheers) is more than enough.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
Again, there’s no need to tip taxi drivers in Japan. Rounding up the fare is common practice but this isn’t considered a tip. Instead, drivers appreciate a courteous demeanour during the ride.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
Don’t tip Japanese porters either. Instead, if a porter assists you with your luggage, express your gratitude with a genuine "doumo arigatou gozaimasu" (thank you very much).
Tipping Housekeeping
You guessed it! Don’t tip the maid service in Japan either.
Instead, if you want to express your thanks for their usually meticulous service, just leave a note saying "osuwarisama deshita" (thank you for the service).
Tipping Tour Guides
Japan’s no-tipping culture also extends to tour guides. If you want to express your gratitude, a verbal “doumo arigatou” (thank you very much) at the end of the tour will be much appreciated.
Tipping in a Ryokan
The exception to Japan’s no-tipping rule. If you’re staying in a Ryokan (traditional Japanese Inn), you can tip the Nakai-San (personal attendant) or Okami (manager).
It remains optional but a tip of ¥1,000 per person at the end of your stay will be very much appreciated.
Place clean, flat bills in an envelope or folded sheet of paper and hand it to the Nakai-San directly using both hands with a genuine bow.
Which Currency To Use
In Japan, you can only use the official currency, the Japanese Yen (JPY). Credit cards are widely accepted in major establishments but it’s advisable to carry cash to use in smaller businesses and rural areas. ATMs are readily available for currency exchange.

Tipping in Restaurants
In Denmark, service charges are included by law so extra tips are optional.
Add 0-10% on top (anything over 10% might be considered overtipping). It’s better to tip in cash given servers usually pre-select “no tip” on card machines and you’re unlikely to have to sign a receipt with a tip line.
Alternatively, instead of a monetary tip, you can express your gratitude with a simple “tak” (thank you).
Tipping in Bars
When enjoying a night out in Denmark, feel free to leave no tip or round up the tab as a friendly gesture.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
It’s customary to round up your fare unless you’ve experienced bad service. At the end of your trip, a simple “tak for turen” (thanks for the ride) is a nice touch.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
It’s not a common practice to tip your hotel porter in Denmark. However, if your bags are on the heavy side and you want to express your gratitude, a small Kr10-20 tip is a considerate gesture.
Tipping Housekeeping
Tipping housekeeping staff in Denmark is not a widespread custom. However, if you want to show your appreciation for their service, feel free to leave a small tip or Kr10-20 per day.
You can place the tip in a visible spot in your room with a note saying “Thanks for the clean room” in English or Danish ("Tak for et rent værelse").
Tipping Tour Guides
It’s not customary to tip tour guides in Denmark either. Danish tour guides are usually well-compensated so tipping is more about recognising exceptional service than fulfilling an obligation. If you do want to tip, any amount, big or small, will be appreciated.
Tipping in Bakeries
Tipping in Danish bakeries is not common practice. In some cases you might see a tip jar on the counter. You’re not obliged to tip in any case but feel free to leave your change in the jar if you’ve had a good experience.
Which Currency To Use
You’ll only have one option when paying or tipping in Denmark, the Danish Krone (Kr).
Card and mobile payments are ubiquitous in Denmark which has become increasingly cashless over the years. However, given the rarity of tipping in Denmark, you’ll often find that cash is the best way to tip if you want a smooth experience.

Tipping in Restaurants
When dining out in Germany, a 5-15% tip or “Trinkgeld” is considered polite (stick to 10% to keep things simple). However, there’s no need for a gratuity if the service was poor.
If a service charge or “Bedienung” fee has been added (less common), then your tip has been included and you don’t need to tip extra (unless you’ve had outstanding service).
Whether you’re paying cash or card, tell your server the total amount you want to pay including your tip (don’t leave cash on the table when you leave).
Tipping in Bars
Whether you’re in a casual or upscale bar/pub, tip 5-10% or round up your bill. In a casual place, leave your tip on the counter or in the tip jar. In a sit-down establishment with table service, tell your server the total amount that you want to pay including your tip.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
A 5-10% tip for a taxi or Uber driver in Germany is considered polite, especially if your driver has gone the extra mile and helped you with luggage or similar.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
It’s customary to hand your porter €1-2 per bag, depending on the weight of your luggage.
Tipping Housekeeping
A €2-3 tip for your housekeeper per day is standard. Leave your tip on the pillow or desk with a note of thanks.
Tipping Tour Guides
A 5-10% tip for tour guides in Germany is considered appropriate. Hand your tip directly to your tour guide at the end.
Tipping Bathroom Attendants
Whether you’re using a public restroom or the facilities in an upscale hotel/restaurant, be prepared to pay a bathroom attendant (or turnstile) €0.50 or higher.
Whilst technically a fee and not a tip, this is Germany’s “pay-to-pee” system. Keep ample change on hand.
Which Currency To Use
You’ll only have one option whether you’re paying or tipping in Germany, the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted but having some cash on hand is a good idea.

In the UK, tipping for good service is customary and appreciated. Legislation also prevents employers from withholding tips meaning service charges and tips paid by card are distributed amongst staff.

Tipping in Restaurants
A 10% tip is customary and polite if you’re dining out in the UK. However, check your bill as service charges of 10-12.5% are common (more likely with larger groups). There’s no need to tip on top of this amount unless you really loved the service.
If a service charge has been included but your service was truly awful, you retain the right to ask for it to be removed.
Tipping in Bars
Bartenders in more casual bars won’t expect tips. However, if you’re happy with the service and you’re paying in cash they’ll appreciate it if they can “keep the change”.
If you’re in a higher-end establishment with table service, tipping 10% is a good rule of thumb. But, again, there’s no need to tip extra if a service charge has been added to your bill.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
It’s customary to tip your taxi, black cab or Uber driver around 10% if they’ve provided excellent service (got you to your destination on time, opened the door for you, unloaded your luggage, etc.).
If you’re paying in cash, rounding up your bill is a fair way to tip. However, if your fare was agreed in advance, there’s no exception for you to tip on tip of this amount.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
Porters, more common in high-end hotels, will appreciate a £1-2/Bag tip (depending on how heavy your suitcases are).
Tipping Housekeeping
In the UK, it’s not customary to tip your maid. Instead, it’s considered polite to ensure your room is reasonably tidy when you leave for the day.
Place all your towels together on the bathroom floor, group your glasses and mugs on the desk and dispose of any rubbish in the bin.
Tipping Tour Guides
On guided tours, a tip of 10-15% is standard but only if you enjoyed the experience. Hand your tip directly to your guide at the end of your tour.
Tipping In British Pubs
If you’re just getting drinks, it’s not customary to tip your bartender at the pub. Like in casual British bars, they will appreciate it but it’s not expected.
If you’re eating, stick to restaurant-tipping etiquette. Tip 10% unless there’s a service charge and don’t tip for poor service.
Which Currency To Use
Only use the local currency, the British Pound (£) when tipping or making payments. Other currencies aren’t accepted. You can tip via card or cash (staff will get their tips in either case) but cash is always a thoughtful touch, especially in traditional pubs or smaller establishments.
Cheers! 🎩🇬🇧

Tipping in Restaurants
When you’re dining out, tipping 5-10% (if there’s no service charge) is the sweet spot. If you’ve had bad service, don’t be afraid to tip nothing. On the other hand, feel free to tip a bit more if your service was excellent.
Hand any tip directly to your server with a warm smile and a nod of appreciation.
Tipping in Bars
Most bars in Thailand offer you table service. If that’s the case, there’s no service charge and you enjoy your drinks, you can simply round up your bill to the nearest ฿50/฿100.
If you order at the bar, much less common in Thailand, a tip isn’t expected.
Tips aren’t expected in Beer Bars or Go-Go Bars.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
Whilst tipping your taxi driver isn’t obligatory, rounding up your fare to the nearest ฿50/฿100 is a way to show appreciation for a driver that safely navigates Thailand’s lively streets.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
Bellboys are common throughout Thailand. Their eagerness, whilst appreciated, can sometimes go a little overboard but, in any case, stick with a ฿20-฿40 tip in total to keep things simple.
Tipping Housekeeping
If your housekeeper does a good job keeping your room clean and tidy, a daily tip of ฿50 will be very much appreciated. You can tip at the end of your stay but since you might have a different maid each day, it’s best to tip daily.
Leave any tip on your bed or desk and make sure to leave a note so they don’t try to return it to you.
Tipping Tour Guides
A tip of ฿50-฿200 per person per day is a gracious way to acknowledge your tour guide’s expertise. Hand the tip directly to your tour guide at the end of the tour.
Tipping Tuk-Tuk Drivers
Unlike taxi drivers, it’s not as common to leave a tip for Tuk-Tuk drivers. Instead, just agree on the fare before you set off.
Which Currency To Use
In Thailand, tip with the local currency, the Thai Baht (฿). Larger establishments are more likely to accept cards than smaller ones so it’s always best to carry cash on hand for tipping. If you’re handing your tip over directly, accompany it with a friendly "khob khun khrap" or "thank you."
