Tipping in Restaurants

In nicer restaurants, tip 10-15% for good service. In casual eateries, tipping around ₲1,000 for good service is perfectly acceptable.

Don’t confuse VAT with a service charge. VAT is added to all goods and services in Paraguay, included in the menu prices but usually shown on the final bill.

Cash tips are preferred even if you pay for the rest of the bill by card.

Tipping In Bars & Cafés

It’s common to tip bartenders and baristas by just rounding up your bill to the nearest ₲1,000 but that’s completely optional in either case.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Locals don’t tend to tip taxi drivers so they’re used to not getting tips. If you’d like to leave a little extra for good service, just round up your fare to the nearest ₲1,000.

Sometimes that just makes things easier since you don’t have to deal with change.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Porters will expect a tip of around $0.50 USD per bag in Guaraní (PYG). Use the current USD/PYG exchange rate to work out your tip.

Tipping Housekeeping

Housekeepers will also expect a tip of around $0.50-$2 USD per day in Guaraní (PYG) for good service. Again, work out your tip by using the current USD/PYG exchange rate.

Tipping Tour Guides

Instead of a percentage, tip your tour guide the Guaraní-equivalent of around $3-5 USD per day. Tip on the higher end of that range if your guide is engaging, knowledgable and entertaining.

Which Currency To Use

In Paraguay, stick to the official currency, the Guaraní (Symbol: ₲, Code: PYG, Plural: Guaraníes).

US Dollars are widely accepted but since you’ll need to use clean and untorn bills with no graffiti, it’s best to use the local currency.

Locals may also find it difficult to exchange larger US dollar bills so sometimes they’ll only accept smaller USD denominations (stick to Guaraní).

Cards are accepted in most establishments in urban areas and in some places on the Golden Circuit (“Circuito de Oro”). ATMs are widely available (fees are common) but only withdraw during business hours in banks or shops for safety reasons.

Tipping In Brazil - A Complete Guide

Quick Guide

🍽️ Restaurant - 10% If Good + No Service Charge

🍹 Bar - 10% If Table Service + No Service Charge

Tipping and saying thank you (“obrigado/a”) for good service is part of Brazilian culture. Don’t expect great customer service everywhere you go (that’s also part of the culture) but try to tip unless you’re actively unhappy with the service you’ve received.

Tipping in Restaurants

Some eateries (restaurants, casual “lanchonetes”, diners) in Brazil will add a service charge (“taxa de serviço”) of around 10-13% on to your bill (“Conta”). Sometimes, it’ll be auto-added, sometimes they’ll ask you first. It’s customary to say yes if satisfied.

If there is a service charge, you’re not expected to tip extra and you can ask for the charge to be removed if you have poor service.

No service charge? A 10% cash tip is customary as long as you’re happy. Leave your tip on the table. In more casual establishments, there may be a tip or “caixinha” box on the counter.

Tipping Bartenders

Sometimes you’ll see a service charge (“serviço”) added on to your bar bill (more common in pubs than Botecos - informal street bars).

If there’s a service charge, there’s no need to tip extra and in cases of really poor service you can ask for it to be removed from your bill.

No service charge? Tip around 10% for table service (preferably in cash). It’s not customary to tip if you’re being served at the bar.

Tipping in Cafés

You won’t find many Brazilians tipping in Cafés. It’s certainly not obligatory but if you’re paying with cash feel free to round up your bill to the nearest Real (R$).

Tipping Taxi and Rideshare Drivers

Most taxi drivers in Brazil don’t expect tips, especially if your fare is prepaid (ie. Rio Radio taxi) or paid via app (Uber).

If you’re getting a metered taxi (yellow in Rio or white in São Paolo) it’s common to round up your fare to the nearest Real. That’s particularly true if your driver loads/unloads your luggage or gives you local advice.

Sometimes, metered taxi drivers actually round down your fare (e.g. R$15.21 to R$15.00). Feel free to pay that amount exactly or give them an extra 1-2 Reais for good service.

Better than a tip, if you’re satisfied with your driver you can always ask them for their number/business card and call them up for subsequent journeys.

Bear in mind that if your route includes tolls your driver will usually add that to your bill.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

It’s customary to hand your porter a cash tip of around R$5 per bag.

Tipping Housekeeping

It’s less common to tip housekeeping but if you’re really pleased with the service, feel free to leave a small tip of around R$5-10 per day. Always leave a note next to the tip.

If you tip on the first day of your trip you may get better service throughout the rest of your stay.

Tipping Tour Guides

Whether you’re taking a boat trip or a slum tour, it’s customary to tip your tour guide around 10-15% of the total tour cost.

Sometimes they’ll pass a hat or similar object around to collect tips at the end of your tour.

Tip on the higher end of that 10-15% range if you’re really satisfied or if there’s a team/crew (the tip will usually be split between them).

Which Currency To Use

Stick to the official currency of Brazil, the Real (Symbol: R$, Plural: Reais), don’t use any other foreign currencies and have some small bills on hand for tipping.

Whilst you might be able to tip via card in some eateries and other establishments, cash tips are usually preferred.

Tipping in Restaurants

For high-end and hotel restaurants, service charges of 10-15% are common (check your bill). You don’t need to tip extra and if you experience poor service you can opt for the charge to be removed. If no service charge, a 10% tip is customary.

For your everyday local restaurant, hole-in-the-wall, snack bar or street food vendor, you’re not expected to tip at all. If the service was particularly good, 5% is generous but not necessary.

You can tip by card in some establishments but cash tips are preferred. Hand any cash tip to your server directly.

Tipping in Bars

It’s not as common to tip bartenders and service charges aren’t typical here but if you do want to leave them a tip, give them around 1-2 Sol per drink.

Ordering food? It’s customary to tip around 5-10%.

Tipping Taxi, Uber & Mototaxi Drivers

You’re not expected to tip taxi, Uber or mototaxi drivers. This is because taxis and mototaxis don’t have meters so it’s more common to haggle your fare before you get in.

That being said, if your driver helps you with your bags, feel free to give them a small tip of 2-3 Sol (completely optional).

For clarification, Mototaxis are those 3 wheeled vehicles you’ll find throughout Peru that look similar to Tuk-Tuks and Rickshaws (best avoided for the safety conscious - no seatbelts, highly vulnerable etc.).

Speaking of safety, it’s best to stick with official taxis with a TAXI placard and a clear, visible vehicle number.

Tipping Airport Porters

Since they’re usually working for tips only, airport porters, who’ll enthusiastically offer to load or carry your luggage, will expect a payment of around 1-2 Sol per bag.

Feel free to reject their request to help you. Be polite but firm.

Tipping Hotel Porters

It’s customary to tip your hotel porter around 2-5 Sol per bag whether there’s a service charge or not. If your porter rejects it they’ll usually just be following hotel policy so just leave it at that.

Service charges of around 10% are only customary in mid-to-high-end hotels. The charge will usually be split evenly between all the staff (e.g. porter, housekeeper, gardener, cook, security guard) and paid monthly.

Tipping Housekeeping

The standard tip for a housekeeper in a mid-to-high-end hotel is around 3-5 Sol per day for great service. However, if your hotel includes a service charge (typically 10%) that tip’s completely optional.

Always leave a note with your tip or they might not be allowed to take it.

Staying in a budget hotel or hostel? It’s much less common to tip housekeepers in this situation. If you’re staying for 3+ days, feel free to tip them around 2-3 Sol in total (not per day) but that’s not essential.

Tipping Day Tour Guides & Drivers

It’s customary (and sometimes expected) to tip tour guides around 10-30 Soles total for a half day tour or 20-50 Soles total for a full day tour.

Alternatively, see if the tour company offers guidance on tipping on your particular tour.

Only tip if you’re satisfied with the service. A good guide will be easy to understand, friendly, engaging, passionate and learned.

Don’t forget the driver. If they’ve safely navigated the typically chaotic Peruvian traffic, give them a tip that’s equal to half of what you would tip the guide.

Tipping On Treks

You’re under no obligation to tip your trek guide or trek staff but it is customary for good service and very common. Always tip at the end of your trek.

Use the following as guidance only. Your trekking tour company may offer specific guidance on tipping on your trek.

In general, tip your Trek Guide around 20-40 Sol per person per day as long as you’re satisfied.

A good guide will work hard and dedicate all of their time to enhancing your experience.

Also in general, tip the Trekking Staff around 15-50 Sol per person per day.

Your guide will usually split this tip between all the staff (porters, chefs, helpers). Most are underpaid, work long tiresome hours and spend a lot of time away from family.

Which Currency To Use

You’ll only have one option in Peru, the Peruvian Sol (PEN). If you tip using another currency like US Dollars, the individual will have to exchange the money. This takes time, they might get a poor exchange rates and fees may apply.

Tip in cash and keep any small bills or change you get for tipping later on.

Tipping in Restaurants

Ecuador Mainland & Galápagos Islands

Service charges of 10-12% are common, especially in mid/high-end restaurants, so always check your bill. Don’t confuse it with the IVA which is tax (Ecuadorian VAT).

You don’t need to tip on top of the service charge but given it’s usually divided between all staff, you might opt to leave your server an extra $1-2 for excellent service.

If there’s no service charge, it’s customary to tip around 10% for good service in mid/high end establishments.

Tips aren’t expected in low-end eateries or local cafés. You may see a tip box near the cashier for loose change but tips in that case remain optional.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Ecuador Mainland & Galápagos Islands

Tipping your taxi driver isn’t necessary. You might want to round up your fare if you don’t want change but it’s not expected or required.

Try to reserve round ups for situations where your driver goes above and beyond. If your driver doesn’t have change, you’ll need to round up anyway.

In the larger Ecuadorian cities like Quito and Guayaquil, metered taxis are common. If there isn’t a meter, agree on your fare before you set off.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Ecuador Mainland

Tip hotel porters around $1-$2 in total (not per bag). Airport porters should get around $1 per bag since they usually work exclusively for tips.

Galápagos Islands

Here, you should tip around $0.50-$1 per bag.

Tipping Housekeeping

Ecuador Mainland

On the mainland you aren’t expected to tip housekeeping. If you’re really impressed with the service, you might feel inclined to leave around $2-3 once at the end of your stay but that’s completely optional.

Galápagos Islands

Tip your housekeeper around $1-2 per day as long as you’re happy with the service. Just leave cash on your bed with a note.

Tipping On Tours and Cruises

Ecuador Mainland

It’s customary to tip most tour guides on the mainland around $10-20 per day total (not per person). Tip drivers half of what you tip the guide.

If you’re staying in an Amazon Lodge or you’re on a Jungle Cruise, tip your Naturalist Guide $10-20 per day and give the rest of the crew/team the same again to split between them.

Galápagos Islands

On a Galápagos Islands Cruise 2 envelopes for 2 separate tips will usually be delivered to your cabin on the last night. These are for cash tips (cards might not work due to spotty service).

One envelope will be for your Naturalist Guide, the other for the captain/crew. If there are no envelopes, it’s best to ask. You might be expected to tip directly or via a tip box.

If they provide you with tipping guidelines, stick to those. Otherwise, as long as you’re satisfied, tip your Naturalist Guide around $15-30 per person per day and tip the crew around $20-30 per family/couple per day.

The more luxurious the cruise, the more money you’ll be expected to tip. You might even be expected to tip more than this which is why it’s important to check and budget for tips.

In any case, if you’re told to tip 10-20% of the cruise cost, that’s not customary. Feel free to ignore that guidance and stick to the ranges above.

For a land or island hopping boat tour of the Galápagos Islands, tip the guide $5-10 per person per day. Tip the driver around $5-10 total and give your island hopping boat crew around $5-10 per person to split between them.

Tipping Street Parking Assistants

Ecuador Mainland

When looking for on-street parking, it’s common for officials (or just entrepreneurial locals) to appear to help guide you to a space. They’ll also keep an eye on your car for you and guide you back out.

Tipping them $1 is perfectly adequate, just roll down your window and pay as you leave.

Which Currency To Use

Ecuador’s official currency is the US Dollar (USD) and you’ll need to stick to that.

Try and keep some small bills on hand as they’re great for tipping.

Whilst you might be able to pay by card, cash tips are always preferred. ATMs are available on mainland Ecuador and on the Galápagos Islands but fees may apply.

Que tengas un buen viaje! (Have a good trip!) 🇬🇹🏞️🧉

Tipping in Restaurants & Cafés

Most restaurants in Colombia will add a 10% tip (“Propina” or “Servico”) on to your bill and it’s customary to pay it as long as you’re satisfied with the service.

It’s considered polite for the server to ask if you want this included (“servicio incluido?”) but some restaurants, especially ones in the more touristy areas, auto-include it. Check your bill to make sure you’re not double tipping.

In the rare case it’s not mentioned, tip around 10% anyway as long as you’re satisfied.

Sometimes, you may see “No Tips” written on the menu or on a sign. If that’s the case, respect the rule and skip the tip.

Eating in a smaller, more local restaurant or café? Tips are still appreciated for good service but they’re less expected. Tip 10% here too or just round up to the nearest COL$1,000.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

You’re not expected to tip taxi or Uber drivers in Colombia. If you’re really impressed with the service, they’re friendly, load/unload your luggage, you can always round up to the nearest 1,000-5,000 Pesos.

In any case, it’s always considered best practice to agree on your fare before you set off. Just give your driver your specific destination.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Most porters/bellboys expect a total tip in the range of $0.50-$2 US Dollars in Colombian Pesos (at the current exchange rate).

Tipping Housekeeping

It’s customary to tip housekeepers around $0.50-$1 US Dollars in Pesos per day. Tip slightly more at the start of your trip and you might get better service throughout your stay.

Tipping Tour Guides

The standard tip for a tour guide is around 5-10% per person per day as long as you’re satisfied. Tip based on the length and quality of your tour.

If you’re on a ‘free’ walking tour, they work for tips so you’ll be expected to give them around $5-$10 USD per person in Pesos (at the current exchange rate).

Which Currency To Use

You’ll only have one option, the official currency, the Colombian Peso (COL$). US Dollars, British Pounds, Euros and other currencies aren’t accepted.

Whilst cards are becoming more widely accepted, especially in larger shops, hotels and restaurants in the major cities, Colombia is still largely a cash-based culture.

Don’t take a lot of money out with you for your own safety and security, store it in your hotel room safe if available. Also, stick to ATMs in enclosed, well-lit areas and don’t go alone.

Stick to smaller denomination notes if you can as some establishments might lack change or they may get annoyed if they have to give you all of theirs when you pay.

Tipping in Restaurants & Bars

Tipping your server or bartender 10% for good service is customary and expected (unless you’re eating fast food in which case a tip isn’t necessary). If you’re unsatisfied, don’t tip. If you’re really satisfied, feel free to tip more (15-20%) but that’s completely optional.

Don’t confuse ITBMS (Panamanian Value-Added Tax) with a service charge.

On a side note, in most restaurants you’ll need to get the waiters attention to get your bill. Just say “la cuenta por favor” (“check please”) or signal to them by imitating writing on your palm.

A lot of places are cash only so sometimes it’s best to check before you order. You may see a sign on the door that says “Efectivo” (“Cash”) but don’t assume they’ll take card just if that sign isn’t there.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

It’s not customary to tip taxi, Uber or Cabify drivers in Panama. Feel free to round up your fare if they provide you with good service by loading/unloading luggage or giving you local advice but that’s completely optional.

Be aware of unmetered taxis as your driver may charge you an inflated fare when you arrive at your destination. That’s why if there’s no meter, it’s usually best to negotiate your fare before you set off.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Whilst most hotels add on a service charge (typically 10%), it’s still customary to tip the porter around $1 per bag.

Tipping Housekeeping

Standard practice is to tip the maid around $2-3 per day, especially in higher-end hotels.

If your hotels adds on a 10% service charge, consider the tip optional but appreciated.

Tip daily, rather than once at the end, and tip a little more on the first day ($4-5) and you’ll likely get better service that’s sustained throughout the duration of your stay.

Tipping Tour Guides

As long as you’re satisfied, a 10% tip, whether you’re on a private, group or multi-day tour would be considered customary.

If you’re on a ‘free’ walking tour, they rely on tips as their main source of income so tip in the $5-$10 per person range depending on the length of the tour and how satisfied you are.

Sometimes, instead of cash tips, guides will ask you to review them on TripAdvisor or similar.

Which Currency To Use

The US Dollar (USD) and the Panamanian Balboa (PAB) are the two official currencies of Panama. Balboa’s are coins only (you’ll tend to get them as change) and US Dollars are used when you’re paying with notes.

Don’t use other currencies like Euros as the person you’re giving them to will have to exchange them and in the process they may pay a fee or get a poor rate.

Cash is king here. Cards are accepted in some establishments like larger restaurants and grocery stores but it varies a lot. Never assume they’ll take cash.

Thankfully, there are ATMs everywhere. You’ll frequently find them in stores and local banks

Tipping in Restaurants

Since the vast majority of restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, there’s no need to tip extra on top.

Don’t confuse a service charge with sales tax, denoted on the bill as IVI (“impuestos de ventas incluídas”) which means “sales tax included”.

It would be considered customary to leave a 10% tip for good service if a service charge. hasn’t been included.

You can leave a cash tip on top of the service charge if your server went above and beyond but it’s definitely not an expectation, 10% is perfectly acceptable here.

Tipping in Bars

If a service charge (typically 10%) is added to your bar bill, there’s no need to tip extra.

No service charge? Tip the current equivalent of $1 USD per drink in Costa Rican Colónes (just tip in USD if you don’t have any local currency).

Tipping Taxi & Shuttle Drivers

If you’re getting a Taxi or Uber over a relatively short distance, it would be considered customary to round up your fare to the nearest Colón (use USD as a backup).

For longer journeys or private shuttles, tip 10-15% if satisfied (no less than that).

Taking a water taxi? The skipper will usually expect a tip of around $2 USD in Colónes.

Tipping Parking Lot Attendants

Parking lot attendants or “Wachiman” usually work predominantly, if not exclusively, for tips. When you leave, roll down your window and tip them around $0.50-$1 USD in the local currency (Colónes).

Wachiman are usually unofficial parking lot attendants identified by bright orange/yellow vests.

They’ll usually help you park, guide you to a spot or watch your car for you whilst you’re away. It’s best to acknowledge them with a wave. They might say something like “se lo cuido” (I’ll watch it for you).

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Whilst 10% hotel service charges are common, it’s still customary to tip the bellhop around $1 USD per bag. If you can, try to give them the current equivalent amount in Costa Rican Colónes.

Tipping Housekeeping

It’s customary to tip your housekeeper the Colón equivalent of around $2 USD per day.

If you’re paying the hotel a 10% service charge, tipping the housekeeper would be considered optional.

Just bear in mind that they might not see a lot of that service charge and you might get better service if you do leave a tip (especially if you leave one on the first day).

Sometimes, your housekeeper will leave an envelope in your room in which you can leave the tip.

Tipping Tour Guides

For tours and excursions (e.g. scuba diving, dolphin tours, ziplines), it’s customary to tip around 10% of the total cost as long as you’re satisfied.

Going on a private fishing charter? In this case, a larger tip of around 15-20%, which should be split between the captain and crew, would be expected.

Which Currency To Use

Stick to the official currency, the Costa Rican Colón (₡), if you can. As a backup, you can tip in US Dollars ($) but their acceptance tends to be confined to more tourist areas. Other currencies, like Euros, aren’t accepted.

If you tip in USD, the person you gave it to will usually exchange the money meaning they might incur fees or they might be offered a poor exchange rate.

Tipping in Restaurants

It’s customary to tip your server around 10% if you’re satisfied (directly or via the tip jar if there is one). If the service was outstanding, you can consider tipping 15-20% but that’s completely optional.

In most cases, restaurants will add a 10% suggested tip (“propina voluntaria”) on to your bill. Most pay this unless unsatisfied. Just be prepared for the owner/manager to ask you went wrong if you opt not to.

A lot of tourists double tip by accident as they tip on top of the total that includes the “propina voluntaria”. In any case, don’t confuse that with IVA (non-optional sales tax).

Tipping Bartenders

Like in restaurants, bartenders here tend to get tipped around 10% of the bill.

You can deposit your tip in the tip jar if there is one. If there isn’t, just leave them a cash tip directly.

Tipping Taxi & Shuttle Drivers

For private shuttles and private taxis, your driver will expect a 10% tip. If they go above and beyond for you, feel free to give them 15-20%.

Most drivers here don’t own their own vehicle. They’re usually employed by a taxi company.

It’s best to tip in Córdobas unless you’re travelling to/from the airport in which case US dollars (untorn bills with no writing on them) are acceptable.

Drivers of shared Collectivo taxis and Chicken Buses don’t expect a tip. Chicken Buses are those old, refurbished American school buses. Why “Chicken”? Because passengers are both packed in like and are sometimes carrying, amongst other goods, chickens.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

If someone handles your luggage in your hotel or at the airport, it’s customary to tip them around $0.50-$1 USD per bag, either in Córdobas (the equivalent amount) or in USD.

Tipping Housekeepers & Cuidadors

Tip your housekeeper or cuidador, your rental home caretaker around $1-2 USD per day.

Give them the equivalent amount in Córdobas (preferable) or just give them clean, untorn US dollar bills that aren’t written on.

Tipping Tour Guides

It’s customary to tip your tour guide around 10% of the total cost. If they went above and beyond by providing you with an excellent experience, feel free to tip them 15-20% or more.

Which Currency To Use

In Nicaragua, it’s best to pay and tip using the local currency, the Nicaraguan Córdoba (C$ or NIO). However, US dollars are widely accepted as long as you pay using untorn bills that don’t have any graffiti on them. Locals won’t be able to exchange USD otherwise.

El Salvador really doesn’t have much of a tipping culture. Barring a few specific scenarios, most service providers won’t expect a tip.

Tipping in Restaurants

Additional tips aren’t necessary in the vast majority of cases as most restaurants in El Salvador add a service charge (typically 10%) on to the bill.

That 10% service charge is perfectly sufficient but feel free to leave an extra 5-10% on top if you want to reward exceptional service. That’s completely optional and nobody will care if you don’t.

If there isn’t a service charge, leaving a 10% cash tip would be considered appropriate.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers throughout El Salvador don’t expect tips.

In fact, you need to be vigilant as some taxi drivers, especially airport drivers, may charge you more than they should.

If there’s a meter, make sure it’s on and they’re using it. If it’s not, they might be planning on charging you an inflated fare so in that case, it’s best to agree on a total price before you set off.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Bucking the trend of other Salvadoran service providers, it is common to tip hotel porters around $0.50-$1 per bag.

For an airport porter, tipping $0.50 per bag is perfectly acceptable.

Which Currency To Use

The official currency of El Salvador is the US Dollar (USD).

Most places (e.g. the majority of restaurants) take card. It’s really just a minority of small establishments that don’t. Just bear in mind that it can sometimes be more expensive to pay by card if fees are charged.

If you do take case, it’s handy to have a lot of small bills as a lot of places won’t offer change if you pay with a larger bill.

ATMs are pretty much everywhere (gas stations, malls etc.).

Tipping in Restaurants

Honduras Mainland

Service charges (“Servicio”) of around 10% are commonly added to restaurant bills in Honduras (you can refuse it if disatissfied).

Most restaurants split the service charge between all staff (front and back of house) so if you’d like to tip your server directly, feel free to leave another 5-10% on top in cash. This is not an expectation and it should be reserved for excellent service.

If there’s no service charge, tip 10% if satisfied Cash tips in Lempira are best, card tips may also be split between all staff.

Sometimes, you may see a tip jar for the kitchen staff. Feel free to leave nothing or any amount in there. They will appreciate it, especially if there’s no service charge.

Bay Islands

Tip 10-20% (no less than 10%) based on your level of satisfaction. If there’s a “Servicio” charge, you don’t need to tip. Just don’t confuse tax with a service charge. You can always your server for clarification if you need to.

Here, you can use Lempira or US Dollars but if USD, stick to clean, untorn notes with no writing or your server won’t be able to exchange them at the local bank.

Tipping In Bars

Honduras Mainland

Bartenders won’t expect tips here but sometimes the bar will add a service charge on to your bill. You won’t be expected to tip on top this and it can be refused if you’re really dissatisfied with the service.

Bay Islands

Tip your bartender $0.50-$2 per drink (no less) in USD (clean, untorn bills with no graffiti) or Lempira. Double that tip for beach service. Tipping won’t only benefit them, it’ll likely result in you getting better service going forward.

Tip on the higher end of that range if you order more complex drinks and bear in mind that some bartenders work for tips only. Even the ones that are salaried tend to be paid so little that they’re highly reliant on tips.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Honduras Mainland & Bay Islands

Taxi drivers won’t expect tips but 10% would be considered polite if they go above and beyond for you, by carrying your luggage or giving you some local guidance.

In any case, it’s usually best to agree on your fare before you set off by telling them exactly where you want dropped off.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Honduras Mainland

It’s customary to tip your porter around $1 USD/bag here in Lempira (HNL).

Bay Islands

Tip your porter around $1 USD/bag here too. You can tip using the equivalent amount of Lempira (HNL) or US dollars but if using USD, stick to bills (not coins) in good condition with no rips or graffiti.

Tipping Housekeeping

Honduras Mainland

As long as your room is clean and presentable, it’s customary to tip your housekeeper around $2-3 USD/night in Lempira. Leave it on the night stand the day you’re leaving.

Bay Islands

Tip $2-5 USD/night on the Bay Islands, either in the equivalent amount of Lempira (notes or coins in any condition) or in US Dollars (clean, untorn bills with no graffiti).

There may be a tip envelope in your room but if there isn’t, leave your tip with a note for the housekeeper so they’re not accused of stealing.

Tipping Tour Guides

Honduras Mainland & Bay Islands

No matter the tour or activity (e.g. hiking, fishing, snorkelling, ziplining, a car/boat tour), it’s customary to tip your tour guide around 10% (Minimum $5 USD or the equivalent amount in Lempira) as long as you’re satisfied.

Alternatively, the touring company may provide guidance on what to tip for your specific tour or experience.

Which Currency To Use

Honduras Mainland

On the mainland, it’s best to give tips in Lempira (HNL), the official currency of Honduras.

Bay Islands

On the Bay Islands, you can tip in Lempira or US Dollars. However, if you do tip in USD, stick to clean, untorn bills with no writing (no coins) as they may not be exchangeable otherwise.

Don’t tip in other currencies like Euros, British Pounds or Canadian Dollars as they’ll be close to impossible to exchange.

Que tengas un buen viaje! (Have a good trip!) 🇭🇳🏖️🏞️🦜

Tipping in Restaurants & Bars

It’s customary to tip around 10% for good service in Guatemala and it’s rare to tip more than that.

Some bars and restaurants will add a service charge (typically around 10%) on to your bill so look out for the word ‘Propina’, Spanish for ‘Tip’. You don’t need to tip on top of the service charge but leaving a cash tip of 5-10% extra will ensure your server gets something.

Cash tips in Quetzales are preferred but you can opt for a US Dollar tip as long as you stick to clean, untorn bills with no graffiti (no US coins either).

Generally speaking, the more high-end the bar/restaurant, the more expectant they’ll be of that 10% tip. Staff in more casual establishments are less likely to get offended if you skip the tip and no tip is expected for fast food.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers here don’t expect tips but rounding up your fare to the nearest Quetzal or US Dollar can sometimes make things easier.

It’s common for drivers to keep their meters turned off (that’s if they have one at all) so it’s considered best practice to negotiate your fare before you set off. To do that, you’ll need to give them your specific destination.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Tipping your porter $2-3 USD worth of Quetzales, in total, is considered customary.

You can tip US Dollar bills but only if you can hand them clean, untorn notes without graffiti.

Tipping Housekeeping

Housekeepers don’t expect tips but if you feel inclined to leave them a tip, you could leave them around $2-3 USD worth of Quetzales per day.

Just leave your tip on the pillow with a note when you go out for the day.

Tipping Tour Guides

Tour guides in Guatemala are often tipped but, in general, they won’t be offended if you don’t tip them.

If your tour lasts a few hours it would be customary to tip around $2-4 USD worth of Quetzales per person for good service.

For full-day or multi-day tours, $5-10 USD in Quetzales per person, per day would be an appropriate amount as long as you’re satisfied.

If you’re on a bus tour, it’s customary to tip the driver around half of what you’d tip the tour guide.

Which Currency To Use

It’s best to stick to the Quetzal (GTQ), the official currency of Guatemala. 100 Centavos (100¢) equates to 1 Quetzal (Q1).

US Dollar bills are widely accepted. However, most places will only accept them if they’re clean, untorn and non-graffitied. This is because Guatemalan banks are picky about the US Dollar bills they’re willing to exchange.

Although cash is king here, you’ll want to minimise the amount you’re carrying around for security reasons. Card payments are gaining popularity but cash tips will remain the best option for a long time to come.

ATMs are more common in bigger town/city centres and supermarkets but fees are common and ATM card skimming can be a concern so you’ll need to remain vigilant.

Que tengas un buen viaje! (Have a good trip!) 🇬🇹🏞️🧉

Tipping in Restaurants & Bars

Servers and bartenders will usually expect a tip of around 10% for good service. 15% would be considered great, 20% exceptional but certainly not expected (it’s rare to tip that high).

Service charges aren’t common, unless you’re dining in an upscale hotel restaurant. If there is a service charge, you don’t need to tip extra.

It’s best to tip your server or bartender directly in cash. You can tip by card in some restaurants and bars but there’s a chance the owner will keep it.

Fast food and street food vendors don’t expect tips.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers here don’t usually expect tips so feel free to leave no tip or tip any amount you like.

If you like one driver in particular, asking for their number and giving them a tip might allow you to secure a reliable chauffeur for the rest of your stay.

In any case, most Belizean taxis don’t have a meter so you should always negotiate your fare before you set off.

Tipping in Hotels

If your hotel adds a service charge on to your bill (more common in high-end hotels), you don’t usually need to tip extra.

No service charge? A tip is usually expected for good service.

Bear in mind that whilst service charges are usually split between all staff, that’s not always the case so you might feel inclined to hand additional cash tips to some staff directly.

You can tip your porter BZ$2/Bag. A good tip for your housekeeper would be around BZ$2-5/Day. Tip 10-15% for a spa treatment.

Tipping In All-Inclusives Resorts & Lodges

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive hotel, beach resort or jungle lodge, usually tips are prohibited as they’re included in the price. If in doubt, ask at the front desk or check your booking info.

All-inclusives generally prohibit tipping as an incentive for the customer and to prevent staff from treating tippers and non-tippers differently.

Tipping Tour Guides

Tour guides usually expect a tip of 10-15% in cash unless a service charge has already been added on to the cost of your experience.

Use this rule whether you’re snorkelling or you’re on a cave, boat, river or temple tour etc.

If there are multiple guides on your excursion, it’s best to just tip the lead guide and ask them to share it with the others.

Which Currency To Use

It’s best to use the Belizean Dollar (BZD), the official currency. However, US Dollars (USD), to which the Belizean Dollar is pegged, is widely accepted.

Since people pay in both BZD and USD, it’s best to specify which “Dollar” you’re talking about when negotiating.

Cards are more likely to be accepted in hotels, restaurants and chain stores but they’re not universally accepted. No matter how you pay, it’s always best to tip in cash.

Enjoy your trip to Belize! 🇧🇿🏝️🐚🗿

Tipping in All-Inclusive Resorts

All-inclusive resorts often include tips in the bill so there’s usually no need to tip unless you want to.

However, it’s always better to check the fine print or ask at the resort front desk as sometimes tipping is prohibited. Resorts often enforce this policy so staff members don’t treat tipping and non-tipping guests differently.

Tipping in Restaurants

Restaurants often add a 10% service charge to the bill. Don’t confuse this with the ABST (Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax).

If the service charge is included, no extra tip is expected but an extra 5% cash tip is somewhat common and always appreciated. This extra cash tip will go directly to your server, unlike the service charge which will be shared between all staff.

If there’s no service charge, tip 10-15% depending on service. You can go higher than 15% for outstanding service but it would be considered impolite to tip less than 10%.

Tipping In Bars

It’s customary to hand your bartender a cash tip of around 10%.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Your taxi driver will expect a 10% tip, 15% would be considered a great tip.

If you pick up a taxi from the airport or a large hotel (taxis can be identified by TX on the license plate), it’ll usually be meterless as fares are fixed. In any case, always agree on a fare before you set off and be clear about the currency you’re talking about (USD or EC$).

Taxi drivers here are often qualified tour guides so if your taxi imparts some local knowledge, tip accordingly (closer to 15%).

Tipping Porters/Bellhops & Doormen

Some hotels and resorts might prohibit tipping (ask the front desk or check your booking). If that’s not the case, the porter or bellhop will expect a tip of around 50¢ USD per bag.

Similarly, the doorman will also expect a tip or around $1 USD (you only need to tip them once).

Tipping Housekeeping

Even though your hotel bill may include a service charge, it’s still customary to tip housekeeping around $1 USD per night (unless it’s specifically banned by your resort - check the fine print or ask at the front desk).

Don’t confuse the service charge with the sales tax or tourism guest levy.

Tipping Tour Guides

It’s customary to tip your tour guide 10-15% of the cost of the tour. It’s considered impolite to tip less than 10% but you can go higher than 15% if you’re very impressed with the experience.

Which Currency To Use

You can use the official currency of Antigua and Barbuda, the East Caribbean Dollar (EC$) but the US Dollar (USD), to which the EC$ is pegged, is accepted everywhere.

Prices are usually displayed in both EC$ and USD.

Cards are widely accepted but cash tips are preferable.

Enjoy your trip to the Caribbean! 🇦🇬⛵🏝️

Tipping in Restaurants

First, check if the restaurant has added a service charge (typically 10%) to your bill.

If there’s no service charge, tip 10-15% for good service. Ifa service charge has been added, you could tip an extra 0-10% of the bill, in cash, on top of this.

It’s not a must to tip of top of the service charge but it’s really the only way to tip your server directly since the service charge is split between all staff.

Tipping In Bars

Getting table service or a lot of drinks? Stick to restaurant-tipping etiquette of 10-15% for good service if there’s no service charge. If there is a service charge, add a 0-10% extra cash tip.

If you’re just getting a drink or two at the bar, tipping isn’t necessary but the bartender would appreciate around $1 USD per drink in cash.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers here usually expect a 10-15% tip. 10% is perfectly acceptable in any case but feel free to tip closer to 15% (or more) if your driver went above and beyond.

Tipping Porters/Bellhops

It’s customary to tip the bellhop $1 USD per bag whether the hotel charges a service charge or not. Service charges of 10% are common.

Tipping Housekeeping

Housekeepers are used to getting tips of around $2-4 USD per day.

If your hotel bill includes a service charge (typically 10%), consider this tip completely optional. If there isn’t a service charge, the $2-4 USD daily tip would be considered customary.

Tipping Tour Guides

It’s customary to tip your tour guide around 10-15% of the total tour cost. Stick to those guidelines whether you’re getting a tour of the island or you’re participating in a speedboat excursion, snorkelling experience or similar.

Always tip at the end of your tour in cash.

Which Currency To Use

Whilst the East Caribbean Dollar (EC$) is the official currency of St Kitts and Nevis, the US Dollar (USD) is widely accepted and even preferred in some cases.

Locals use both the USD and EC$ in everyday life and some vendors display prices in both currencies.

Since it isn’t easy for locals to get USD (due to typically expensive exchange rates), a lot of them save their USD tips and use them for travel.

Both islands, St Kitts and Nevis, have banks and 24/7 ATMs although they dispense EC$ only.

Whilst cards are accepted in most hotels and large restaurants, cash tips are usually preferred.

Tipping in Restaurants

A 15-20% cash tip is considered customary for good service but don’t feel the need to tip extra if a service charge has already been added to your bill. Also, you can skip the tip if you’re dissatisfied.

Service charges aren’t always included, it depends on the restaurant so check your bill carefully.

Some servers will insist that service charges aren’t tips. That’s definitely not that case but do bear in mind that a lot of restaurants split service charges between all staff so it won’t all go directly to your specific waiter/waitress.

Tipping In Bars

Getting one or two drinks? Give a cash tip of around $1 per drink.

If there’s table service or you’re buying a lot of drinks, stick to the restaurant rule of 15-20% in cash for good service. You don’t need to tip on top of a service charge if there is one.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

A 10-20% tip would be considered customary for your taxi driver. Tip closer to 20% if you’re really pleased with the driver, if they handle your luggage or provide you with local advice.

Tipping Porters/Bellhops

Like in the US Virgin Islands, it’s customary to tip hotel porters around $1 per bag even if the hotel adds a service charge on to your bill.

Tipping Housekeeping

If you’re staying in a hotel, it’s customary to tip your housekeeper around $2-3 in cash per day (don’t feel the need if your bill includes a service charge).

Staying in a villa with a full staff? A 5-20% cash tip on checkout is considered customary. If management have added on a service charge (typically 5-10%) those 5-20% cash tips become more optional but they’re still common (you might opt to tip on the lower end of that range instead).

Tipping On Tours & Private Charters

A 15-20% tip based on your tour or charter’s retail cost is considered good etiquette.

On a private boat charter, your crew will make or break your trip so tip in that range accordingly.

Tip closer to 20% if your crew went above and beyond and stick to 15% if you’re not particularly impressed with the service.

Remember, your charter crew will usually be paid a salary but they do work long hours and they’re expected to go above and beyond for guests.

You can usually tip your charter crew via cash or card but cash is preferred. It’s usually the responsibility of the Captain to ensure tips are evenly distributed between all crew members.

Which Currency To Use

The US Dollar (USD) is the official currency of the British Virgin Islands.

Whilst cards are widely accepted, cash tips are usually preferred and some bars, transport options and smaller establishments are cash only.

ATMs aren’t as prevalent as in the US Virgin Islands but they’re available in major towns and tourist hubs like Road Town, Spanish Town, ferry/cruise ship docks and airports. Just bear in mind that ATM fees are common.

Have a safe trip to the BVI 🇻🇬🏝️⛵

In the US Virgin Islands, tipping is customary for good service but not mandatory. Tipping is also more expected of tourists than of locals.

Since the US Virgin Islands are small and word can get around, you’re likely to be well taken care of if you’re a good tipper. be well taken care of if it you’re a good tipper.

Tipping in Restaurants

Virgin Islanders typically expect a 15-20% tip for good service but, unlike in the USA, you don’t need to tip if you experienced poor service.

Some restaurants add a service charge on to your bill so you don’t need to tip extra if that’s the case. If service isn’t included, it’s always better to tip in cash.

If you’re going to be a repeat visitor, leaving a good tip can help to ensure good service on your return.

Tipping In Bars

If you’re just getting a drink or two, tipping around $1 per drink in cash is customary.

If you’re at a sit-down bar, you’re getting multiple drinks or you’re staying for a while, tip around 15-20% in cash for good service, like you would in a restaurant.

However, like in a restaurant here, you don’t need to tip extra if a service charge has been added to your bill.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

It’s customary to tip taxi drivers around 10-20% here (or just an extra $1-4). Tip on the higher end if you’ve got a good courteous driver, if they load/unload your bags, give you an island tour or provide you with local tips.

Tipping Porters/Bellhops

Whether your hotel includes/excludes a service charge, it’s considered the norm to tip your porter around $1 per bag.

Tipping Housekeeping

Don’t feel the need to tip if your hotel bill includes a service charge but, if it doesn’t, a $2-3 cash tip per day is considered the norm.

Tipping On Tours & Private Charters

Whether you’re on a tour or private boat charter, a 15-20% tip based on the retail cost is considered customary and polite.

Given the crew are central to your overall experience on a private charter, you should tip in that 15-20% range based on service.

If the crew went above and beyond overall, tip closer to 20%. If you left unimpressed with the service, tip closer to 15%.

Cash tips are preferable in most cases but card tips are usually an option. In any case, the captain is usually the one responsible for making sure all tips are distributed evenly between all crew members.

Which Currency To Use

The official currency of the US Virgin Islands is the US Dollar (USD).

Cards are widely accepted but having cash on hand is recommended given some establishments are cash-only and cash tips are usually preferable.

Thankfully, ATMs are widespread on all the main islands (Saint Thomas, Saint John and Saint Croix). You’ll find them downtown, in shops and throughout the larger resorts.

Just be aware that they’re not prevalent on the minor islands and ATM transaction fees are common.

Safe travels on your trip to the USVI 🇻🇮🌴🚢

The Bahamas have a big tipping culture. Cash tips are not just accepted but expected in a lot of scenarios. Service charges are common but it’s more complicated than that (see the full guide below).

Tipping in Restaurants

A total tip of around 20% is usually expected in The Bahamas. Since auto-included service charges of around 15% are common, you should usually tip your server extra to get to that 20% figure (e.g. tip your server an extra 5% if the service charge is 15%).

However, since service charges are usually split between all resort/restaurant staff, you might want to (or feel pressured to) increase that extra cash tip to 10-15%, especially if you’re eating in a large resort with thousands of employees.

This double tipping can be frustrating, especially since food is expensive and Bahamian customer service can often feel more transactional than friendly. Expect better service on the Out/Family Islands than in Nassau.

Although some resorts are cashless when it comes to paying the main bill, it’s better to give that extra tip to your server in cash.

Tipping Bartenders

It’s customary (and usually expected) to tip the bartender $1 USD per drink.

Tipping Cab Drivers

It’s customary to tip your cab driver around 15% in cash.

Tipping Porters/Bellhops

Although hotel service charges are common, it’s still customary to tip porters around $1-2 USD per bag.

Tipping Housekeeping

Hotels will often add a 15% service charge to your bill but since this is split between all staff, your maid will only see a small fraction of that if you’re staying in a large resort.

So, smaller resort/hotel, no need to tip extra. Larger resort with more staff, tip the maid around $2 USD per day in cash but only if you’re happy with the service.

In either case, if you have any unwanted change, you can always leave this for the maid at the end of your stay.

Tipping Your Tour Guide & Boat Crew

It’s customary to tip your tour guide or boat crew (boat tour, fishing charter etc.) around 10-20% of the total cost as long as you enjoyed the experience.

Which Currency To Use

Whilst the Bahamian Dollar (BSD or $B) is the official currency of the Bahamas, it’s tied to the US Dollar (USD) and both are accepted.

In fact, US dollars are preferred in some cases and you’ll have to use them in Bahamian casinos.

Cards are widely accepted but always tip in cash if you can.

Whilst Saint Lucians workers will usually appreciate tips (big or small), they won’t expect one in a lot of situations. Tipping is actually prohibited by a lot of hotels and resorts, where service charges are common.

Tipping In All-Inclusive Resorts

If you’re staying at an All-Inclusive (AI) resort, always ask about the tipping policy in advance or at the front desk.

In order to maintain equal service for all guests, some resorts have banned tipping. If there’s not a ban, they can provide you with guidance on how much to tip the porter, housekeeper, waiter, bartender, pool staff at your specific resort.

Your resort bill may already include a service charge (typically 10-15%) in which case tips are at your discretion, unless prohibited.

Tipping Villa Staff

If you’ve booked a stay in a fully-staffed villa, ask your point of contact about the tipping policy.

Sometimes individual staff members will expect specific tips but in a lot of cases you can just tip 5-10% at the end of your stay. That tip can then be split between all staff.

Tipping in Restaurants

10-15% service charges are common, just don’t confuse a service charge for VAT (ask if unsure).

If no service charge has been added, tip around 10-15% for good service, preferably in cash.

Tipping Bartenders

Bartenders, whether hotel/resort employees or otherwise, won’t expect tips but feel free to tip them around $2 USD in cash when you leave.

If you’re drinking at a bar in your hotel/resort, tipping might be prohibited (you can always ask).

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Tipping your taxi driver is completely at your discretion. Consider a 10% tip if you had great service but it’s by no means mandatory.

In any case, always agree on a fare in advance, specifying the currency that you’re going to pay in. If you say “$20”, specify whether that’s $20 in USD or EC$ (East Caribbean Dollars).

Tipping Porters/Bellhops

It’s customary to tip the hotel porter around $1-2 USD/Bag unless your hotel or resort charges a service fee (typically 10-15%) or they have a tipping ban in place.

Tipping Housekeeping

Your housekeeper won’t expect a tip but they will appreciate a tip of around $2-4 USD/day.

If a service charge is added on to your hotel bill or if your hotel prohibits tipping, don’t tip.

Tipping Tour Guides

A 5-10% tip for your tour guide won’t be expected but it will be appreciated. Tip if you’re satisfied with the experience and/or if it’s been a long tour.

Which Currency To Use

You can pay and tip using the official currency of Saint Lucia, the East Caribbean Dollar (EC$) or you can use the US Dollar (USD).

US Dollars are widely accepted, just bear in mind that you might get change in EC$, especially if you’re buying an item from a local store.

Most hotels, restaurants and large stores accept cards and ATMs, which will provide you with EC$, are widely available.

Have a great trip to the Caribbean! 🇱🇨 ⛰️ 🏖️

Tipping In All-Inclusive Resorts

If you’re staying at an All-Inclusive (AI), it’s always better to go to the front desk and ask about the resorts tipping policy (for waiters, bartenders, housekeeping etc.).

Some AI resorts try to dissuade guests from tipping to ensure that some guests aren’t given preferential treatment over others, hence standard 10-15% hotel service charges.

Tipping Villa Staff

If you’ve opted for a staffed villa, it’s considered customary to tip the staff depending on the quality of service received. Tip once at the end of your stay.

Tip housekeepers $2-4 USD/day, chefs 10% of the grocery cost, butlers $5-15/day per guest and gardeners/pool attendants $2-4 USD/day.

Tipping in Restaurants

A service charge of 10-15% is customary. If you see it on your bill, there’s no need to tip extra. If there’s no service charge, 10% is standard for good service.

You can usually add the tip to the bill if you’re paying by card (local and international VISA/Mastercard debit and credit cards are accepted). Alternatively, you can leave a cash tip.

It’s common for tips to be distributed amongst all staff.

Two pieces of advice. Bajan (Barbadian) waiters don’t tend to present you with your bill until you ask for it and, in general, it’s always better to book dining in advance as it’s common for places to be booked out.

Tipping Bartenders

Tipping bartenders is completely at your discretion. If you’ve received good service, you can tip around $1 USD per drink but unlike in the USA, it’s a kind, optional gesture more than the standard practice.

If you’re a frequent, returning customer, you can tip a larger amount once before you leave but it’s still at your discretion.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

A 10% tip is optional but appreciated if you’re happy with your driver.

In any case, always agree on a fare before you set off. Airport signs display taxi fares but the vast majority of drivers vary the fare depending on passenger numbers and luggage.

Tipping Hotel Bellhops and Airport Red Caps

It’s customary to tip your hotel bellhop around $1 USD per bag even if a 10-15% service charge is included in your hotel bill.

You’ll see multiple ‘Red Caps’, airport porters who help with bags and escort you through customs, once you’re through immigration. Tipping them $1-2 USD per bag is the norm but consider a larger tip if they’ve gone the extra mile (e.g. carried heavy bags, provided great service).

Tipping Housekeeping

A $2 USD tip per day, left on the bed, is common if you’re pleased with the service. However, it’s much less common to tip if your hotel bill includes the standard 10-15% service charge.

Tipping Tour Guides

Handing your tour guide a 10% cash tip is considered the norm but only tip if you’re satisfied with the experience.

Tipping Grocery Packers

It’s customary to tip supermarket grocery packers around $2 USD. They’ll usually pack your bags and carry them to your car,

Which Currency To Use

Whilst the Barbados Dollar (BBD) is the official currency of Barbados, US Dollars (USD), are widely accepted and most items are priced in USD (VAT included) unless otherwise stated.

In addition to USD and BBD cash payments, most establishments accept local and international VISA/Mastercard debit and credit cards.

Tipping in Restaurants

It’s common to leave your server a tip of around 5-10% if satisfied. You can tip more if the food and service was excellent but it’s not obligatory. Alternatively, you can just round up the bill to the nearest €5 or €10.

If a service charge has been added (more common in tourist areas and beach resorts), an extra tip isn’t necessary.

You may see a €1pp cover charge (“Kuver” in Montenegrin) on your bill. This is common and is used to pay for the provision of bread, olive oil, cutlery and other small accompaniments. It goes directly to the restaurant so don’t let it affect your tip.

It’s always better to tip in cash to ensure your server gets it directly.

Tipping in Bars & Nightclubs

Tips are completely optional in this situation. However, it is common to tip if you’re satisfied and you’ve bought numerous drinks, spent a long time there or you’re a returning customer.

If you are tipping, just round up your bill to the nearest €1 or €2 or leave the change.

Tipping in Coffee Bars

Tips aren’t mandatory here either. If you feel inclined to tip, you can just round up the bill to the next €1 but it remains optional and it’s not a big deal either way.

Tips of 5c or less can risk insult and make you look cheap so if that’s the case, you could round up to the next €2 or just skip the tip completely (e.g. Pay €3 or €1.98 exactly if the bill is €1.98)

Tipping Taxi Drivers

Tipping your taxi driver is completely optional too. You can tip around 10% or round up your fare to the nearest €1 or €2 but only tip if you’re satisfied.

Reserve tips for safe drivers with clean cars who go above and beyond (e.g. they load or unload your luggage).

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

It’s customary to tip your porter around €1 per bag.

Tipping Housekeeping

Tipping your housekeeper around €1 per person, per day with a note is optional but quite common. Only tip if you’re satisfied.

It’s better to tip daily rather than once at the end to encourage continual great service and in case there are staff changes throughout your stay.

Tipping Paid & Free Tour Guides

For paid tours, a tip of around 5-10% is optional but appreciated. Only tip if you’re satisfied and base your tip on the quality and length of the tour.

For a free tour where tips are the guide’s main source of income, tip around €5-€10 per person.

Which Currency To Use

Montenegro uses the Euro (€) and that’s the only optional you’ll have. Whilst cards are widely accepted, it’s always better to have cash in case that’s not an option.

In any case, it’s always better to tip in cash if you can. This ensures that the tip goes directly to the service provider, not the business owner or manager.

ATMs aren’t as commonplace as some other countries but they are available. Local bank ATM withdrawal charges aren’t common but you may be charged currency conversion fees depending on your bank or card so bringing Euros with you may be a better option.
