Tipping in Restaurants

When dining in Italy, tipping around 10-15% of the bill is common, especially if the service is exceptional. However, if a “servizio” or “service charge” has been included in your bill, you don’t need to tip on top of this.

If you see “coperto” on your bill, that isn’t the same as a tip of service charge. That’s a separate and somewhat controversial fee that covers the space and tableware used during your meal.

Hand any tip directly to waitstaff and tip in cash. Tipping on card isn’t common in Italy and it’s not always possible given the way some of their card machines work.

Tipping in Bars

In bars in Italy, tipping is not mandatory. However, a small gesture of €1-2 for good service can be appreciated. Leave the tip on the counter or in the designated tip jar.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

When taking a taxi or Uber in Italy, a tip of 5-10% of the total fare is a polite way to show appreciation for good service. Simply hand the tip to the driver upon reaching your destination.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Tip your hotel porter or bellhop €1-2 per bag and hand them any tip directly.

Tipping Housekeeping

Leaving a tip of €1-2 per day for your housekeeper is appreciated, especially if they’ve done a good job or you’ve made their job a bit more challenging.

Tipping Tour Guides

When you participate in a guided tour in Italy it's customary to tip 5-10% of the tour cost, provided you're satisfied with the experience. Hand this gratuity directly to your guide at the end of the tour.

Tipping In Coffee Bars

At local coffee bars it’s common to leave your change on the counter or in the establishment’s tip jar as a way to acknowledge swift service.

Which Currency To Use

You’ll be using the Euro (€). Cash is preferred for tipping so you should carry coins and bills with you for convenience. Even though cards are widely accepted in Italy, it’s not always possible or optimal to tip by card.
