Tipping in Restaurants
In Mexico, tipping in restaurants is customary. Locals often leave around 10-15% of the bill but feel free to add extra if your service has been exceptional. Many places don’t include a “Propina” or service charge but you don’t need to tip on top of that amount if there is one.
Hand your cash directly to the waiter or leave it on the table.
Tipping in Bars
Tipping your bartender 15% or $0.5-1 USD in Pesos (M$) per drink is appreciated. Hand your tip to the bartender directly to slip it onto the counter after each order.
Tipping Taxi Drivers
It’s definitely not mandatory to tip your Taxi driver in Mexico but it is common. To keep things simple, you can just round up your bill. Just hand your tip directly to your driver to thank them for a safe journey.
Tipping The Porter/Bellhop
In hotels across Mexico, it is customary to tip porters who assist you with your luggage. Tip $1 USD in Pesos per bag to acknowledge their assistance.
Tipping Housekeeping
A tip of $1-2.50 USD in Pesos per day for housekeeping is appreciated. Place the tip in a visible spot in your hotel room or hand it to your housekeeper directly.
Tipping Tour Guides
It’s common to tip tour guides 10-15% of the total tour cost. Give the tip directly to your guide at the end of the tour.
Tipping Gas Station Attendants
Offering a small tip of 3-5% to your gas station attendant is appreciated. Hand it to them directly.
Which Currency To Use
In Mexico, it’s best to tip in the local currency, the Mexican Peso (M$). Some establishments accept credit cards but it’s advisable to have cash on hand for tipping. If you’re tipping any staff member directly, accompany the gesture with a friendly “gracias” or “thank you.”
