Tipping in Restaurants

In restaurants in Poland, a 10% tip if expected unless you’ve had bad service. If you’re paying in cash and you want the change, don’t say “thank you” or “dziękuję” just yet or the waiter will think you’re tipping the whole amount.

Cash tips are preferable even if you’re paying by card (sometimes there’s not even an option to add a tip by card). Just leave a cash amount on the table after you’ve paid the bill.

Service charges are rare.

Tipping in Bars

Follow the 10% guideline in Polish bars too. Tip jars are common.

Tipping Taxi Drivers

If you’re taking a taxi or Uber, the 10% rule applies here too. However, there’s a bit more discretion here as you should really reserve a 10% tip for drivers that pick optimal routes and/or provide the best service (like helping you with luggage or opening your door).

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

When a porter assists you with your luggage and they’re prompt and helpful, it’s customary to tip around zł5-10. Hand the tip directly to the porter.

Tipping Housekeeping

For housekeeping, a tip of zł5-10 per day can show your appreciation for a clean room and help to ensure you’ll receive good service until the end of your stay. Leaving cash on the pillow will make it clear it’s a tip.

Tipping Tour Guides

Your tour guide will expect a tip of 10-15% but you reserve the right not to tip if you’re dissatisfied with the experience.

Which Currency To Use

You have one currency option when you pay or tip in Poland and that’s the Polish Złoty (PLN). Card payments are widely accepted but it’s still better to carry cash with you for tipping. Sometimes you won’t even get the option to tip by card.
